5 Ways to Save On Heating Oil

Tired of spending so much on heating oil? As we near another winter, it’s time to start looking at how you can reduce your heating costs and make this winter more cost effective.

Fortunately, there are several ways to save money and to keep your heating costs down this year. Not only will you save money, you’ll improve your overall efficiency.

1. Order Early

When it’s the dead of winter, everyone needs heating oil and the price may be higher. To prevent paying more, it’s best to order early and to buy enough to last you throughout the colder months. You’ll often pay less if you purchase more, so it’s certainly better than waiting until the prices go up.

2. Find an Economical Fuel Source

It can also be worth taking a little time to research the various options you have for oil suppliers. Some suppliers are more economical than others, but it’s impossible to tell until you’ve gotten a quote from a few options. Once you’ve found a reasonable one, you should be sure to order your oil early.

3. Service Your Boiler

A poorly functioning boiler will burn up much more oil than is strictly necessary. To ensure this is not a problem, take the time to schedule your boiler service in the fall before you need to use it. This will ensure everything in in working order by the time the cooler weather comes in and you need to use it.

4. Lower the Thermostat

Even reducing the temperature in your home one degree can save you money. In fact, it’s estimated that it can lower your oil bill by roughly 10%. Even one or two degrees will not make a huge difference in how you feel in your home, but it could be a major difference in how much you spend on heating.

5. Stop Up the Draughts

Every home has areas where the cold can come in and the heat can escape. These make your boiler that much less efficient, and you’ll find that you are burning more oil than you would like. To prevent this, check out where your draughts are and seal them up.

Check near outlets, windows, and doors to ensure you have blocked up as many draughts as possible. If your home is older, there may be quite a lot of places where the cold comes in. You may also wish to add extra insulation to your attic to prevent the heat from escaping.

Heating oil can be expensive, but with these tips, you can save quite a bit on your heating. It’s a matter of being prepared and knowing exactly how to reduce the amount of oil you use. It should be possible to save money and still be comfortable, all throughout the winter.
